Being Honest & Getting Real About Energy
This site has an interesting writeup of Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer's (D) push for a coal-to-liquid-fuel plant here in Montana (the Montana Energy Conference is taking place right now, by the way). Schweitzer, thankfully, is committed to making sure the environmental issues surrounding this project are handled in a way that protects Montana's environment. However, he made a good point to those who refuse to even consider the project simply because it deals with coal.
He told Lee Newspapers that:
"Everybody who is reading this story has got a light bulb on in their house right now, and that light bulb is probably hooked to some coal-fired generator or hydroelectric plant. So unless they're willing to live naked, eat nuts and live in a tree, then we've got to talk about the future of energy generation."
His point is simple - we've got to find a way to both expand alternative energy AND find environmentally-friendly ways to use traditional sources of energy, as well. It's going to take a combination to really deal with America's energy challenges.
