The Montana Mircale Continues

The new MSU-Billings poll is out, and it confirms that the Montana Miracle is growing. Gov. Brian Schweitzer (D), who became this state's first Democratic governor in 16 years, has a stratospheric 69% job approval rating. In case you thought this was just a pro-incumbent poll - look at Senator Conrad Burns' (R) and Congressman Denny Rehberg's (R) putrid numbers. Only 48% approve of Burns' job performance, and only 49% approve of Rehberg's - terrible numbers for longtime incumbents.

What's really incredible about these numbers is that they are only a year removed from President Bush winning this state overwhelmingly (though he's now at 42% approval here). It shows that Democrats can compete - and win - in red states, as long as they carry a strong populist message.
