Most Democrats and One Republican Get It Right on Iraq
39 Democratic Senators today voted to request a timetable in Iraq. The move forced the GOP to put forward an alternative that still demands more accountability from the Administration, proving that even putting up a fight can result in far better policy.
Those 39 Democrats (including my Democratic Senator, Max Baucus) were joined by Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island. That makes Lincoln Chafee a better vote for responsible foreign policy than Democrats like Joe Lieberman. Kent Conrad, Mark Pryor, and the Nelsons of Florida and Nebraska round out the other Democrats who voted with the GOP.
Admirably, that means every single Democrat in the Senate eyeing a run for the Presidency voted correctly this morning (unless, of course, since I can't find a total roll call list that one of them wasn't present).
All of these Senators deserve our thanks for standing up on this important issue.
