THEN vs. NOW: The Hypocrisy of the Tax Cut Zealots

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels (R), who was President Bush's first budget director, has long been on the frontlines of the tax wars in these countries, fighting side-by-side with zealots like Grover Norquist to vilify any efforts to make the tax system more fair, or increase government revenues for public priorities. Now, as governor, he is living in the bed he made. Can anyone say "hypocrite?"

THEN:

"The long-term growth of the economy can only be benefited by well crafted tax cuts." - White House Budget Director Mitch Daniels, 1/19/01

"Ours is not an undertaxed society...Our problem is not inadequate revenues. They're going up 55 percent over this time period, even with the president's tax relief in place. – White House Budget Director Mitch Daniels 2/4/02

"If [tax cuts are] such a bad idea, you know, please stop complaining about it and propose its repeal. Now when you do, you will have a little trouble because you will have to explain to America what you want to repeal." – White House Budget Director Mitch Daniels opposing repeal of Bush's tax cuts, 2/5/03

NOW:

"For the second time in two years, Gov. Mitch Daniels used his State of the State speech to call for a tax increase." - Indianapolis Star, 1/12/06
