Business Backs Education Initiative in California
Every now and again, a coalition is formed that brings together different interests in pursuit of the common good. That seems to be happening in California these days. According to Businessweek "both the Los Angeles and San Francisco Chambers of Commerce are supporting an initiative on the California ballot to tax the rich and finance free, voluntary public preschool for all the state's 4-year-olds."
Big Business pushing for a tax increase on the wealthy? Yes, that's right - as one California business leader said, "California is underachieving in education, so we decided not to take a knee-jerk reaction to a tax hike." But not everything is going well for the intiative. Businessweek also notes that "despite business backing, the proposal faces an uphill climb" as Grover Norquist-style anti-tax groups are preparing to mobilize against it. Stay tuned.
