Making Big Money Interests Play By the Rules

The Associated Press has a major expose on how the federal government is letting big corporations off the hook when these corporations commit crimes. It's a classic story of Big Money interests buying special treatment with campaign contributions - but it doesn't have to happen everywhere. As just one example, this week in Montana, Gov. Brian Schweitzer (D) ordered the state to assume cleanup operations from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad company at a major Superfund site in Livingston because BNSF has been refusing to do its job. Schweitzer will have the state perform the cleanup, and then bill the company directly - yet another example of Schweitzer standing up to powerful interests on behalf of the people. If only such an ethic was operating at the federal level...
