Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Hero)

You want to know how easy it is to stand up to Republicans in a cogent, "tough" way? It's simple - just check out Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) today.

Here was Feingold today on Fox News:

"I’m amazed at Democrats, cowering with this president’s numbers so low. The administration just has to raise the specter of the war and the Democrats run and hide. … Too many Democrats are going to do the same thing they did in 2000 and 2004. In the face of this, they’ll say we’d better just focus on domestic issues. … [Democrats shouldn’t] cower to the argument, that whatever you do, if you question the administration, you’re helping the terrorists."

Colorado Sen. Wayne Allard (R) proceeded to embarrass himself by saying Feingold's measure to protect the constitution meant Feingold was "[siding] with terrorists." That's the kind of over-the-top, wildly-out-of-control response Democrats should want from Feingold's move, because it shows the GOP to be so maniacal, so desperate to hold onto power that they will say absolutely anything, no matter how ridiculous.

Russ Feingold is a hero - he's providing a model for every other Democrat in Congress to follow. He's showing that Democrats - if they have guts - can face down the Republicans and go toe-to-toe with them on national security.
