Politics 101: If You Don't Lead, Voters Won't Follow

Garance Franke-Ruta responds to my earlier post by essentially saying that Senior U.S. Senators who have been in Congress for more than two decades like Chuck Schumer have absolutely no responsibility to "lead" - only a responsibility to follow others, even if that means standing for nothing. And yet, incredibly, people then wonder why the American people haven't been willing to elect Democratic majorities. Here's the cold, hard truth: people are not going to vote for a party whose senior power players are unwilling to actually LEAD their colleagues. They vote for a party whose leaders actually LEAD. The more we encourage senior Democrats to be followers and not leaders, the more we encourage permanent minority status.
